Updated information on prescribing and dispensing of pregabalin from 17th July 2017

NHS England has issued updated information in relation to the prescribing and dispensing of pregabalin.

Where appropriate, from 17th July 2017, generic pregabalin can be prescribed and dispensed for any licensed condition.

The guidance highlights the end of the period of patent protection for Lyrica across all clinical indications. Prescribers are therefore able to prescribe pregabalin generically for any indication as clinically appropriate from 17th July 2017. Prescribers should continue to consider the benefits of prescribing by brand name when used for epilepsy, in line with MHRA guidance, given the potential for different bioavailability between brands.
