Supply Issues & Shortages – DHSC Updates reinstated via SPS

The DHSC has reinstated publication of monthly reports and information on current issues affecting supply of medicines in England via the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service website: https://www.sps.nhs.uk/articles/department-of-health-and-pharmaceutical-market-strategy-group-pmsg-supply-updates/  The monthly Supply Issues Updates for Primary and Secondary Care and linked documents are also circulated through the PrescQIPP network and form the core of the Notts APC COVID-19 Supply Issues summary. Much of the content is indexed in the MIMS Shortage Tracker.

COVID-19 & ACE-inhibitors or ARBs

NICE has published COVID-19 rapid evidence summary: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in people with or at risk of COVID-19 – which includes the following conclusion: Despite biological plausibility for the role of ACEIs and ARBs in both increasing and decreasing the risk of COVID-19 and its complications, this evidence review has not found any observational or experimental data to support these hypotheses. However, the risks of stopping treatment with an ACEI or an ARB, such as worsening heart failure or hypertension, are well understood.

COVID-19 & NSAIDs – NICE Advice

NICE has published a COVID-19 rapid evidence summary on Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for people with or at risk of COVID-19 – which includes the following conclusion: No evidence was found to suggest that people taking NSAIDs for a long-term condition should be advised to stop treatment in the context of COVID‑19. Stopping or switching NSAID treatment could have a negative impact on some people. Clinicians should follow advice in the BNF and the NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary on issues around prescribing NSAIDs.
