Chief Medical Officer Alert: Antiviral Medicines for Influenza

GPs and other prescribers working in primary care may now prescribe antiviral medicines for the prophylaxis and treatment of influenza at NHS expense .

Routine surveillance data indicate an increase in influenza cases in the community.

Antiviral medicines may now be prescribed for patents in “clinical at‐risk groups” as
well as any who are at risk of severe illness and/or complicatons from influenza
if not treated.

Prescribing should be guided by Public Health England guidance on appropriate use of antiviral drugs for the prophylaxis and treatment of influenza.
